I love Buttercup for the food (try the Curry Chicken Salad), the sweets, the teas, the critters and birds, the pond to sit by outback, and especially the people that work there and frequent there. Everyone is friendly and pleasant. It is a treasure in the middle of Downtown DeLand.
I plan to give this place another try in later months, and if things change or If I find a product that doesn't reflect these two issues I will gladly submit a second review with a higher stars!
Lovely pastries and cookies. Watch out! "Butter" is in the name for a reason. Talk about RICH. Decent prices for how filling everything is. Lovely ducks and ibises live in the pond behind, making for a great place to take my toddler who loves animals. Quality all around.
I've ate here about 3 times know and I've tried around 10 - 13 items. I tend to make sure I get enough to have snacks for a couple of days. I will admit before anything else, that they are good bakers. Their products are good, and it's a nice addition to Downtown Deland. But with that said, I have two problems with them.
Perfect if you have a college student at Stetson University celebrating a birthday. I called in the morning to order a dozen jumbo cupcakes and they were delivered on campus before lunch! And, they texted me pictures! Quick, beautiful, dependable and delicious - according to the birthday girl!
2) The products have flavor, but I feel it's submerged beneath the overwhelming taste of sugar. Just this past time I got a death by chocolate slice of cake. I could not for the life of me discern the specific flavors of chocolate being used. Couldn't tell if it was dark (and what % of cocoa), milk, regular. Nothing. I got a slight fudge taste and that was it. I did however get an overwhelming taste of just straight sugar, and it's extremely odd to me. I've also had this with the Blondie bars. I get some flavor out of those more so than the cake and I'll admit they're unique creations. But it's back to the same issue. I understand it's a given when baking to expect mass amounts of sugar, but that never should be the prominent flavor.
The desserts were good. I wish they had a little indie seating area. The day we went there were tons of birds outside and we ended up taking the treats to go. My favorite was the lucky charms blondie!
1) The pricing is a bit to steep. I understand Deland rent can be pricey, and you do pay for quality. But it cost just slightly under $20 for 2 blondie bars and a slice of cake. I can only fathom what a full pan or a whole cake would cost.
